11 lighting images

  1. Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
  2. Say which depict top, back or under lighting.
  3. What effects are created by the lighting in each image?

There is Low key-lighting.
There is top lighting.
In this image there is suspense and tension. She is looking up which shows me she's upset and looking for help(maybe god) she looks worried and upset. She's holding a cigarette in her hand but she's not smoking it which shows that she's worried about something.

High key lighting
Back lighting and top lighting
There is top lighting showing us his crown which shows me that they want us to know whose in charge as he looks like the boss. There is also shady parts which are highlighting his face to show us his facial expressions.

Low-key lighting
Back and under lighting
The top lighting adds effect to the character showing us that he has power and control. You can also see his facial expression which shows effect to this character.

High key lighting
Under and back lighting
The bright light can show the expression of the woman. They wanted to highlight that main fact that she looks scared/horrified by what she's seeing. This shows mystery and suspicion.

High key lighting
Top and back lighting
The back lighting shows us the dark highlights off the couple and also gives us a sense of secrecy. The top lighting shows us that their love is more natural than secretive as its bright and showing us some facial features.

Low key lighting
Back lighting
There are no faces or emotion showing in this picture which tells me that they are mysterious, secretive and maybe dangerous as we don't know anything about them.

High key lighting
Under lighting
You can sense a fear from this picture as the way her facial expression is.She seems agitated, scared and worried, this is what the lighting wanted to show.

High key lighting
Key lighting
The lighting in this image is bright as you can see everything and they are only focusing on the top part of the body which shows that this what had the most emotion.

Low key lighting
Back and top lighting
The way the camera is shows us that he is meant to be intimidating as he is higher up.The vague light is hitting his face which is showing us his face which is covered in a mask which means he doesn't want to show his identity.

High key lighting
Under and top lighting
You can see that the this couple/friends are comfortable with one another and the light wanted to show that.

Institution Feeback

My group feedback- News Corporation.

Great video-You got the history in 2 mins!

The activity works well too, getting the major brands reinforced at the start of the lesson
Good research-the key facts covered in bullet points.
Too much reading off power point to class harder to maintain interest.
Could have made more of Murdoch and importance of his influence over politicians etc.
The news corp brands are vital-could have stayed on the next slide for longer, and discussed these.
Big miss: where's is the phone hacking scandal? Your  missing the most aspect of news corp, recent history its also a major current debate in the media.
No plenary-you did have a final slide but needed to test the class,That the class had learned something from your lesson.

WWW: I found that our information was well said and very informative. We managed to cover most of the facts that needed to be known.

EBI: We missed out some recent news on news corp. We didn't expand on our plenary and didn't leave  it long enough for the class to see.

My comparison on 3 clips

( Scream)

(White Chicks)

(Twilight)

Costume-
In image 1 one of the main characters who is the murder is dressed in all black with a mask on its face trying to hide its identity. this means that they don't want to give the audience away of who the actual character is.The fact that its wearing black connotes danger, darkness, sadness etc. This means that the audience know that they are bad news.
In the second image the character look like sisters. They look alike and are wearing bright girly colours. The woman on the left is wearing a pink leather jacket, pink t-shirt and jeans while the one on the right is wearing a blue leather jacket, a red t-shirt and jeans with a belt. These are what typical girls would wear. The girls behind tem are wearing dresses and skirts so this tells me that the two main characters arent very girly like their friends.
The third picture shows a couple. The male character is wearing a shirt, black jeans and a grey jacket, whereas the female character is wearing jeans,a white t-shirt and a grey hooded top. This tells me that they dress like typical teenagers. The female character doesnt seem to be very girl-like and has stuck to normal dull colours and so has the male.In the first picture the charcter is wearing black-even though that character is wearing black in this picture it seems very dull, boring and a bit scary.this tells me that you dont have to wear a colour that connotes danger in order for it to be scary.

Lighting-
In all three images you can see the characters well. In the first picture you can see the character very clearly. They wanted to show what the character looked like in the outside but not under the mask this tells me they want the character to be mysterious. In the second image you can also see the characters very well as they are centre of attention. In the last image you can also see the charcters well but as they are lying on there side you can only see half of a face.On the other two images above the third one they have used lighting to show what they look like whereas on the last image they have used a dull light to see who they are.

Actors-
In the first image you cant see who the person is as they are wearing a costume. You cant tell if its a man or woman. This means they are keeping their identity a secret to their viewers. In the second picture you can see that there are two women but they look slightly manly. The one on the right seems to be folding their arms like some male character do and the other one on the left seems to be slouching. On the last picture both actors are lying down on their sides-they may be communicating just staring at each other. They seem to be comfortable. All characters are different on the images.

Make-up-
I can see that on the first image there isnt any make-up but they may have used some to make blood on the knife that the character is holding. This want to show what the character is done or what its doing. On the second image the characters are wearing make-up.hey are wearing pink lipstick, they have there blonde hair nicely done, they may have contacts on.this sis to show a typical woman character. However on the last image the woman is wearing very subtle make-up-so maybe just some powder or Vaseline to give a natural look. This shows that there can be many ways in which girls/woman are mentioned as.

Props-
In the first image there is a knife and the costume the character is holding which are props. In the second image there are clothes that the characters are wearing, the lighting in the background. In the last image there is there clothes, shoes. This shows that these images don't really have allot of props in the specific scene i have chose. But as films do they have many props.

Setting-
In the first image the setting seems to be set in a house as i can see windows,a vase and a coach behind the character. This tells me that the character may have killed someone in the house. In the second image they seem to be at a party/club as the girls are dressed up,the lights are dimmed down towards the back but lighter on the characters. In the last image the two characters are lying on green grass that seems dull so they may be in the forest/garden/woods.All three images have different settings to each other.

Distinctive still image

I find this image interesting as allot of mise-en-scene is in this image, even if there isnt alot happening.
In this image i can see a man (Sherlock Holmes) sitting down on the sofa and staring at the violin hes holding. There is a man oppisite him facing its back to the camera. This tells me that maybe this man ddoesn'twant to be known or seen. They are in a dark messy, confused room but seem calm in it.There is rubbish on the floor which probably tells me there might have been a incident. The tables are dirty and full of rubbish which means they didnt take care of the room they were in.

Costumes-
The main character the man facing us (Sherlock Holmes) seems to be in a suit and shirt. This tells me that he takes care in his appearance and dresses smartly. The other man standing on the right staring at the window looks also smart.I think hes wearing a coat over a suit and a scarf so this tells me it was cold.

Lighting-
There is natural light shining through the windows even when they hae curtains/net curtains shut. This tells me that they used natural sunlight to show the two main characters. The most sunlight is on the man standing, but the sunlight doesnt seem to hit him,it shines on the floor showing use the red rug and bits of paper. This means that the directors didnt want to show the characters but to try and show the scene that had happend.

Actors-
You cant really see the characters that much. This shows me that they wanted to keep the characters soet of mysterious. You can see who they are but not as much as you would like. All three charcters seem to be occupied. The main character is looking/playing the violin, the one whose standing up seems to be observing the window and the other charcter who we cannot see seems to be looking towards the character whose staring at the window seeing what hes doing.

Make-up-
On these three characters you cant see any make-up on them, but as Sherlock Holmes and his partner are detectives they may wear just a bit as they are celebritys and many actors do wear make-up.However if this is a crime scene or something has happened the characters then would of worn make-up but you wouldn't usually wear make-up at a crime scene.

Props-
In this image there are many props. This whole image is made up of them for example the furniture, windows, walls, bags, clothes, rug etc. This shows me that props are very is important in scenes as they give effect of whats happening.

Setting-
The setting seems to be in a dark, dull room at noon/morning time as you can see the light. Its also set in the cold seasons so autumn/winter as one character is wearing a scarf.

Mise-en-scene notes

I found out that there are five elements to mise-en-scene.

The first one is settings and props
The second one is, Costume, hair and make-up
The third one is ,Facial expressions and body language
The fourth one is,lighting and colour
And the last one is,The position the characters and objects are in.

Settings and Props
Settings and props play a big part in films and programmes. They aren't always just left in the background so that no-one can see them.
Film sets are made from scratch or built together to set a scene. These scenes can be unrealistic or realistic. These settings can be set to manipulate a certain scene in a film/programme or at theatres.By building certain scenes it goes with the flow of what the film/programme is going to be about.
In a science fiction film a setting you could find is a big spaceship in the background,sci-fi buildings and the props you could find are sci-fi laser guns, big drastic metallic objects and even costumes are cast as props.
In a romantic comedy the settings could be a bright sunny, spring setting maybe set in a romantic country like New York,Paris etc. The props could be the handbags the woman holds in the film/programme.Also there could be the drinks, food, furniture etc. These things are all set in a romantic comedy movie.
A horror film could could have a dark, cloudy, building setting. For example it could be  set in a haunted house or something.Props that they could have are typical things in a horror movie like a knife,chainsaw/sharp objects and gloves, detective objects etc.

Costume,hair and make-up
In a movie/programme a person needs to be disguised as character so they don't show there normal characters. Its a instant indicator of a characters personality, status and job.So for example if a  person is fun and bubbly and there character is supposed to be a psychotic maniac they would need to be in that role in personality wise and looks. The way the person looks tells us if this is set in the present/past and what culture/society its in.Certain costumes can signify a certain individuals so for example, a black coat could signify a vampire and a magnifying glass could show us there is a detective.

Facial expressions and body language
Facial expressions can tell us how a character/person is feeling.
So for example if someone is smiling and the face is glowing that means that they are happy or excited. If this was accompanied with sci-fi music us as viewers would get a different feel.
Body language may indicate to us how a character is feeling and what they are about to do.This also may reflect the way there relationship is in.

Positions of characters and objects within a frame
Positioning within a frame can draw our attention to an important character/object.
A person can indicate a relationship with people with this.
For example in the first image the male character is sitting at the end of the sofa with there hands on there laps-which show me hes forgiving or thinking about  something. The woman thats on the otherside of the sofa have there arms crossed and an angry face this shows me that they have probably had an argument and aren't talking to each other.
The second image shows two males in a formal/sci-fi uniform. They look poker faced and are looking staright at the camera which tells me they are dominant.
Lighting and colour
There is lighting and colour to highlight characters/objects within the frame/scene.
They can use this by making the characters look mysterious by shading sections of the face and body.
They can also reflect mental state/hidden emotions for example brightness means happy and darkness means disturbed etc.
Types of Low key lighting are:
Created by only using the key and back lights.
produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas
Deep,distinct shadow/silhouettes.

Types of High key lighting are:
More filler lights are used.Lighting is natural and realistic to our eyes.
Produces brightly lit sets or a sunny day.

The mise-en-scene tells me about this shot is that i can see an abandoned ship that is near a castle. So it tells me that the castle and ship are maybe connected together somehow. So maybe there is a person who is trapped in the castle who is a pirate and living in a castle you are expected to be royal and important so maybe they kidnapped a pirate. But then there is also two other people on the side walking towards a boat and maybe there getting away from the castle because they aren't good people. The sky is bright blue so it tells me that it may not be a sad movie and that it could be a comedy/drama film. Also this could be set on the Caribbean sea as there is normally little islands that get reigned by and maybe the castle people are making sure no one comes near the island. There is also been some natural lighting either from the sun.

Lighting and set
In this image i can see four beggars trapped behind a gate.they look like they are trying to get the dog to come towards them and get them out. The lighting in the image is gloomy, cold, olden ages. This shows that this was set back maybe to when pirates were around. The set is in a olden day cellar. There are candles and swords on the side of the table.

Props and costume
In this image i can see many different types of costumes and props.I can see a person dressed as a pirate.I can tell this as hes wearing a big hat, sword, boots and a belt. Hes standing on treasure.I can see this as there is a treasure chest on top beside the pirate. There is gold coins, jewels, jewellery, pots, crowns etc. Also there are other characters that are holding fire lamps and are also wearing pirate-like costumes. They look like they are under a cave as i can see the rocks and cave like building.

Costume and expressions
In this image there are three people looking at four people. They look like they are eyeing them up and giving dirty looks to them. The other four people look calm and poker faced whereas the pirate and the two friends of his are looking at them with confusion and with surprised. The costumes they are wearing are from the Victorian type times but before them and pirate like. The other two people beside the pirate are wearing like shirts, long bow ties, frills on the sleeves, waistcoat etc.The pirate is wearing a hat, shirt, belt, coat, jewellery and wears dreadlocks which tells me that he shows true colours of a pirate. They have there hair in ponytails which shows me that they are in the vintage days and they have long sideburns.

Analyses of Shreddies

The advert i will be analysing is Shreddies.
Shreddies is a well known nestle brand cereal that is made from whole grain wheat. In this advert you can see a central image of a elderly woman, who seems to be posing in a smiley way and staring into the camera. The setting is in a formal elderly style .This means that elderly women/grandmas are going to be the main point of this advert. the composition of the camera is good as its showing the main person in the advert and also highlighting the other people in the background. Shes holding knitting needles which shows a stereotype of old women. they are associated with knitting and being boring. The lighting in this advert highlights the main woman and the cereal boxes. This shows that they are trying to show their product off and show the what the elderly woman is doing. The colours are very bright and friendly. The colours blues, greens and pinks show happiness, calmness and freshness,it puts a good feel to the atmosphere of the advert which is being funny.

In the background there are boxes of shreddies behind them on shelves and on the table beside the elderly woman. The other flavoured shreddies are smaller in size than the the one that they are trying to promote which is just the original shreddies. This means that maybe they want more children to go for the healthier option and go for the original flavour that is maybe not selling very well. Also in the background sitting in a line are elderly women. This advert is trying to show the elderly women making the shreddies using their knitting equipment just like the woman in the central image is.

Those boxes are different flavours of what shreddies can produce. There is chocolate, sugar coated and honey flavour. This shows that they are a brand that aren't boring and can develop more than one product yearly. They have been successful for many years and are probably going to continue doing that. They want children to attract to their products by finding the advert funny, seeing that elderly women are friendly and smiley, that the product looks tasty and inviting to them.Without a target audience they wouldnt be able to sell anything.Every child should eat breakfast and shreddies is a cereal that children may eat.

The font the words "shreddies...and your ready!" are in a friendly, bold, cartoonish font. This shows that their target audience is children.they are aiming there cereal at children and therefore need there colours, people and product to be child friendly. The logo for shreddies is the word shreddies in red font on top of splashed milk. This shows that they are trying to show them that you eat shreddies with milk-which is how you eat cereal. The slogan s is maybe trying to act like a competition. When your in a race you say "get ready" or "ready or not....here i come" which are words that are  used when children play games. So maybe they are trying to say when your ready come ad get your box of shreddies or shreddies is now ready for you to eat.The words 'you're ready' show that shreddies are trying to be competitive and tell the audience that you're ready to buy the product. Also, this shows that they are excited and happy as the word sounds exciting.

Analyses of Demons Never Die

I chose to analyse the film Demons Never Die.
I think the film is about a man(centre) is a serial killer. The picture has been taken in a landscape way.He kills teenagers that he knows or don't know or that have done something bad to him. This story line probably goes on until the end and then he gets unveiled. He could be one of the teenagers friends or they might not even know him. The film name is in a type of font that is spooky/scary which shows that the film is going to be a thriller/drama type of film. The words "never die" are in a different colour and in a different type of font. This tells me that might want to highlight the fact that what the man is doing it never dies-it never runs out. Also it tells me that its quite dangerous and you would want to stay away from it.I can see that the main character is facing its back towards us which shows that they don't want to be unveiled. They want to be unknown, they want to keep the main character a mystery to keep the story on-going.

There is a face of a woman on the knife that the mysterious guy is holding towards us,hes showing us the woman's face vaguely but not his?the lighting is highlighted on the knife to show the womans face and see how she has been affected in the film. This shows to me that he is a serial killer. This is because hes wearing gloves and in the background there are teenagers who are sitting around talking but, don't seem to notice him which shows me that hes always watching them and that he gets away with the murders that he does. Also the colours are dark. There is red, blue, black, grey and greens but they are dulled done to go with the theme of the film which is thriller. The dark colours connote evil, death and mystery which is what the film wants to make the audience think.

The word demon from the film title tells me that they are evil, full of dark thoughts and that they wont don't back down. The film title just tells me that the main character who is facing its back towards me is a bit like a demon who wont give up until everything is done-so making sure they kill everyone. In the background you can tell that this film has been made in London because of the gherkin in the background. There are also flats and other buildings that could be featured in the film.Maybe the teens live around there or grew up in that are. This shows that they wanted to show the main parts of where the film was made so that it has that it had a home-grown feel to it.

In the background there are teenagers sitting on park benches in groups/gangs this is a typical stereotype of what is associated with teenagers these days.teens are seen as being either violent, rude, getting into drugs, sex and being seen as youths that people should stay away from.In this film poster they look like they don't care, they are slouching, making eye contact with eachother and there is also graffiti on the brick wall behind them-which makes viewers think they have done it or that they are trying to communicate to the killer through graffiti on the wall. There are also flats/estate behind the wall so it could show that this is where the teenagers usually hang about in the park near there houses. Also in the background is the way the clouds have been made to look.the colours in the sky are dark, sad and evil. This connotes that there is something suspicious going on and that there is something lurking in the dark.

Analysis of Reebok advert

The Reebok poster shows a central image of 50 Cent who is a well-known rapper. The colours in this poster are dull, gloomy and connote sadness. This shows that the poster is trying to be rebellious towards the younger/teenage generation.Reebok wanted to show maybe that they can be a rebel kind of brand so stand out from its competitors like Nike, puma and converse.they wanted to be different and show that they can be better than them which is why 50 Cent is on the front cover of the advert. To teenagers being rebel or being part of danger excites them as they think that's cool.

The background of this advert shows finger prints so this is a denotation of prison, criminal or even being a victim. In the past 50 Cent has been in trouble with the police and the fingerprints in the background could show that, that's how he used to be-being in trouble with the law or even being a victim. The words "i am what i am" shows that in the past he made mistakes and he cant change them and can only move on and look in the future. Also the words "where i am from there is no plan B" this shows me that  hes had a troubled past and knows that there was no escape from it.Maybe Reebok wanted to show there viewers that they have to buy there product now rather than later because there will be no time.

This shows that Reebok wanted to be brand that can be recognised by everyone and they done this by putting him in the front cover of the advert. You can tell that this is a advert and not a magazine or a website because it has the central image, writing and the Reebok logo.In the writing they wanted to be remembered by who they work with, what there logo looks like and there catchy slogans. For example "Take advantage of today because tomorrow is not promised" this shows that they want them to buy Reebok now and not the next day because you never know what's going to happen tomorrow.

The image is of a medium close-up this shows that they only wanted to see the strong emotion of his facial features as he looks angry, serious and grim. They wanted to shine the light  and highlight the strong features of his nose, eyes, mouth etc. Also the way hes standing is sort of intimidating as hes standing on the side and hes looking directly at the camera in a fierce way. Also hes wearing a camouflage hat backwards which shows that hes trying to show a gangster kind of look-which in stereotype is a hard look to show that they are better than everyone else which is what Reebok is trying to do-be different.

Film Language Analysis

What do you think the story is about and what might the story line be?
What genres do you think the story belongs to?
Who do you think the target audience is?

I think the story is sci-fi/action movie. So i think it could be about aliens meeting humans, this would be set on a spaceship or in the galaxy. The main characters are on the front cover so they would probably be trying to survive till the end.Film makers wouldn't put the main characters on the front for them just to die.So they are there to be entertaining and make sure they are the main stars.I think the genre belongs to sci-fi/action movie because there is Harrison ford is holding a gun that looks sci-fi and at the bottom of the film cover there is tall buildings that look inter-galactic.The target audience is people who are interested in sci-fi movies.I think mainly males that are between mid 20s onwards are interested in  these types of movies.

I think the story is about all scary things or characters coming into one movie and making it a comedy. Even though its called "scary movie" it isn't scary its funny, the producers wanted it to be a movie that made peoples feelings about scary/horror movies funnier and not so scary. They wanted them to see the funny side to it.I think the genres are scary/comedy.The movie is funny and not scary at all.I think the target audience is for teenagers so 16 yr onwards. This is because it does contain adult humour and it does show and say things that younger children shouldn't see etc.

I think the story is based in a foreign country like Poland,Russia,Sweden etc because of the scenery and name of the film. The scenery looks run down, cold, polluted, dull so the movie could be about war or some sort of explosion that has happened.I think the genre it belongs to is action/drama/thriller.This because of the scene the man is in and the way he staring towards the scenery. i think the target audience is people aged between 18yrs and over as this doesn't look like a child friendly film.

I think the story is about a child that claims he's not scared but he is.I think he's maybe found something underground and sees it and that creature or whatever he found scares him but then from that moment that he's scared he tries to convince himself to be brave and try to confront or see that thing again.I think the genre is thriller/drama.This is because it looks like a movie that wants to try and be realistic and try and fit in with drama. The target audience is 16yrs and over.

I think the film is about a gang that try and find someone that has done something to them and they want to try and kill them or make them suffer. The gang probably think they run the city they live in so they are probably quite popular to others that want or try and get involved with them. I think the genres are thriller/action.This is because the film cover looks intimidating/hard and that what you would associate with a thriller/acvtion movie. the target audience is 18 yrs and above because i think people under that age wouldn't be able to

I think the story is about pirates on a ship trying to find a treasure chest so they could be wealthy.the pirate has a gun in his hand so that means they have to go through obstacles to get to it as other people want the chest too. I think the genres are drama/comedy/animation.This is because there are some funny one liners that are said in the movie and also there are animated characters/scenery that take part and that are there. i think the target audience is for 8 yrs and 13 years old as children form those ages can enjoy and find this film interesting.

I think that the story is about a Indian woman going to America for the first time and falling in love with a white american man. Then they face some tough decisions then they get married. I think the genre it belongs to is comedy/chick flick. This is because its mainly aimed at females and the story does have some funny one liners in it. I think the target is women aged between 15 years onwards.I chose this area because its a comedy film that doesn't contain anything explicit or bad in it which is why 15 is a good age.

I think the story is about a woman who is a spy and needs to get some money hence the title"million dollar bay".The main character has probably got into the wrong crowd and wants take there money from them or either shes doing them a favour. i think the genre belongs to thriller/drama/action.this is because the film cover is dark mainly with the colour black which connotes that it will be a very sleek, hard film. Also you cant really see the faces of the characters so they are trying to be mysterious think the target audience is 16-18 years and over this is because it doesn't seem to look suitable for ages under that.

Why i chose Media A level

I chose media A-level because i found that it was a good subject when ik took in year 10. It was enjoyable, creative and a exciting subject and when i did this as a GCSE. It was never really a boring subject, which was good because it made you focus on the work and not anything else. Im hoping to get a B and above in media A-level.
This is why i chose media A-level.
