Plan B music video

The Ill Manors music video is a video that is quite typical of a rap/hip-hop genre. You have a gang or other members of the group, you have iconic scenery in the background and you have a lot of bass and beat to the music that is getting sung. Ben Drew is the main person in the video but as he is doing a film for this song he had to include his staff and actors into the music video so that they audience can relate to the video and get to take part in it. If the music video was aimed at Ill Manors and there were no recognition of the actors or familiar places in the video it wouldn’t have been popular and wouldn’t have made sense in a way.

There were some parts where could see some Londoner riots happening in the video. Plan B wanted to make a statement of showing the country what it was like around London at the time of the riots and what was said or done about it. Plan B wanted to make sure that this was getting across that the kids that were trying to lash out were the ones that needed help and need to be dealt with but in a way that was done properly and correctly. Many kids grow up In care homes and don’t grow up with any role models around them so whatever they see on T.V or hear about is what they look to when they need help or are stuck. It offers the audience to see and hear Plan B speak out in the way of lyrics so that people can understand and hear about it. The music video is properly done and looks like a music video. He wanted to show some iconic moments which is what he did. It does go well with the Ill Manors theme as that’s what happens. The music video helps promote the film as it looks exciting and interesting from the music video as its targeting a young audience so they would think that. The song is quite catchy so people would listen to it and then also watch the film.

Print platform: Plan B

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?

i would say that the target audience is between 20 years of age onwards as hes trying to look formal and set some sort of example. They would be attracted to it as that age they know whats right and wrong and by having somesort of role model they can see that he looks good and looks well and would want to follow in those steps as from what he was before to now.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory)
The article shows an image of Plan B in a suit looking smart. Hes telling his story of how he went through being over weight to now a good size that hes comfortable with. It gives those people who are not fit a chance tp read and see what someone went through and try and do the same.

3) Does this text allow the audience to participate/contribute? (E.g. leave comments) How is this different to the print version of the magazine?
It allows the audience to leave Facebook comments and give their opinions on things.

4) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?

I can see a few central images. The images are mainly medium shots and shows his top half his body onwards. He made sure that there are subheadings so that the audiences can keep engaged in the magazine and see what's happening.

5) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article?

There are speeches of him talking and there are some talks about Ill Manors as that was his first film and would talk about it as there are fans out there that have seen the film and enjoyed it.There are subheadings which are there to keep the reader engaged and interested in the magazine.

6) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied?

Hes using Ill Manors as that's his film and needed to talk about something that was interesting and important to him. You can see a comparison in the text and in the interview.

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?

This magazine is more for people who are more interested in what a celebrity does. So, this is a target for working class people who are interested in gossip or who like celebs.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory)

The article does do more like it says and mentions a lot about what worries Ben Drew in life. By Ill Manors screening they want to be able to show that they care about kids as he does care about them. He tells people and shows people that he cares. He cares as they can do so much for themselves which is why he screened some people in a film.

3) Does this text allows the audience to participate/contribute? (E.g. leave comments) How is this different to the print version of the magazine?
They aren't really allowed to leave comments and stuff on their work. As they need to be able to read the magazine. The work needs to be able to show some work.

4) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?

I can see a central image, title, tag line or speech form the article and can see some good use of colours being sued around.

5) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article?

It depends on what the audience is interested in hearing. If they want to hear and talk about the life in east London and how the government can help kids then they would read it.

6) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied?

There are some mixed work with the Tedx lecture as they are talking and hearing about the work that he saying. They are talking mainly about political views etc.

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?

The group that it mainly targets as a whole is ages between 20-35 years old. This is because the guardian is more of a newspaper that older people read and take interest in. This makes it different as tplan b isnt the type to target an audience like this.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory)

This article is more formal and helps inform them and keeps them updated about and around the world. It doers entertain in a way as they are talking about a hip-hop artist.

3) Does this text allow the audience to participate/contribute? (E.g. leave comments) How is this different to the print version of the magazine?

This is different as people can comment and participate in it.

4) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?

I can see that there is a tagline to show what's being done and said.

5) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article?

A narrative is being used in the story to show it as he can be seen in a good light to everyone else.

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?

The ages this targets is between 18-25 years old. As its a fresh type magazine that wouldn't interest older people than that age group. This would target upper class people as its something that is interesting to them.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory)

The article entertains alot more than be descriptive as its a magazine that is entertaining.

3) Does this text allow the audience to participate/contribute? (E.g. leave comments) How is this different to the print version of the magazine?

People can leave comments and participate.

4) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?

There are many features, like a tag-line, and talking about plan b alot

5) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article?

The way plan B is working and talking hes sounding more educated in a way as he needs to target a upper class lot of people.

Section B- A field in england

First, read the Media Magazine article on A Field In England in Issue 47 and write a 100 word summary of the article on your blog. You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive- click on MM47 and go to page 19.

Now read the following pages on the official website that provide explanations of the unique release strategy that the institutions behind the film chose:

Industrial Evolution: Producer Andy Starke on the music industry influences informing A Field In England’s release strategy.
Screening/radical release: Commissioning Executive Anna Higgs on the groundbreaking release plans for A Field In England.
Audience: Anna Higgs discusses where A Field In England sits within British cinema and how it will reach its intended audience for the film.

Finally, answer the following questions on your blog:

How was A Field In England’s release different to typical film releases?

A field in England was  a bit different to how normal films are released as the film was released at the same time all around the country. They tried to do show and broadcast the film around like this as they wanted to make sure that they had a different audience and tried to attract as much audience as possible doing this by showing them at the same time.

What are the advantages to releasing the film across all platforms on the same day?

there are many advantages of broadcasting a film on the same day as it shows a different wide range of audience to the film. They made sure that they have the film and that it is done right and done in a way that is correct so that they can get the work properly and that it attracts alot of people.

What are the disadvantages to this approach?
Some disadvantages are that some people wont watch the trailer or film so that means that they wont get the right the audience and the right frame of mind in the work that they do. By not showing it to everyone some people wont see the film and therefore they will lose out on a audience that could watch it.

What target audience would A Field In England be aimed at? Demographics and Psychographics.

I think this target audience would be good for explorers as they are the ones that are interested in the world and what happens around everywhere. they are the ones that seek adventure and show that they are interested in that life for them.

Do you think all films in future will be released across all platforms simultaneously in future?
I dont think that it should happen as its important to distribute it around the country by having the DVDS being shown around and making sure that there is enough to go round so that they can watch it and be able to understand it.

Ill Manors-institution research

Distribution research

Research film distribution using this guide from the UK Film Distributors' Association. It's called Launching Film and takes you through the whole process of distributing a movie.

Read the whole step-by-step guide (warning: this is LONG and will take you around an hour)

Summarise the 10 steps of film distribution in a list using your own words.
they show an understanding of how to identify its audience and making sure its done properly.
they show some points of showing and telling why they would go and see it
they show that they want the cinema operators to go and see/play the film.
Showing some developments in the work and see if there are some things to do.
there are six big time film companies that are working with hollywood.
They show different ways in how to make that happen
They show that they can do certain work without being done to do it properly.
They tell and show who the film is aimed at and what their target or goal is \at the end of it.
they all group up and show that they are interested by showing their film or trailer out to everyone.
they then broadcast the film out.

Ill Manors: Funding and production budget

What was the estimated budget for Ill Manors?
£100,000

Where did the money come from? List the different organisations and companies that contributed funding to Ill Manors. BBC Films, Film London, microwave and Amimage.

How did the Ill Manors budget compare to a Hollywood blockbuster such as Skyfall?
Ill Manors was done on a low budget and was done without really well-known stars. Skyfall is meant to be a big Hollywood film that makes sure that their is a difference. Skyfall was done on a bigger budget and used big time hollywood actors.

Film London and Microwave Film

What is Film London and why does it exist?
Film London is there to show film reviews, film listings and let critics be critical. Its there to promote up coming films in the London area.

What is the purpose of Microwave Film?
Microwave film is are films that are there to make sure that films are getting their recognition and that they are being successful.

List three other films funded by Microwave Film and embed their trailers in your blog.

Choose one film funded by Microwave film and explain how it compares to Ill Manors (similarities and differences)

Shifty is a comparison to Ill Manors as they are both similar in a way as they are about some sort of crime. Shifty is more calmer in a way than ill manors. They made sure that they aren't that similar in a way as they cant have the same story line. Riz ahmed is in both Ill Manors and in Shifty this gives the audience a  way of understanding and reconsigning the way that he is.

Distributor: Revolver Entertainment

When was Revolver Entertainment created?
 2004

Revolver Entertainment enjoyed a lot of success with the UK urban drama genre. Find three Revolver films that fit that genre, embed the trailers from YouTube and write about why they were successful.
Choose one film distributed by Revolver Entertainment and explain how it compares to Ill Manors (similarities and differences).

Sket is a film that shows urban drama around London. Ill Manors also showed this around. Having this type of audience can make this a  successful film. Making sure that there is a audience for the film makes it easier for the film. The work was made to have a specific audience. This film is mainly focused on a female perspective whereas Ill Manors shows a wider range of audience.

Why did Revolver Entertainment go out of business in 2013?
Revolver went out of business because they couldn't afford to keep going and they kept losing staff because they wanted to go to a better and more sustainable company something that Revolver was lacking in.

How is new technology changing the way films are being distributed?
Cinemas and downloading are trending more as people would rather go out or download an app to watch films on. This means that DVDs and some websites are getting out of business.

Gunslinger

Visit the Gunslinger website and list the three films currently in development (click on theSlate tab).

Research the Gunslinger/Revolver film Shank. Embed the trailer in your blog and explain how it compares to Ill Manors (similarities and differences).

Shank is a similar film to Ill Manors as they show that they are similar by getting into crime and stuff. Ill Manors does relate as they also showed crimes like this. They both showed gangs and getting into the wrong crowed.

List other Gunslinger films that fit the UK urban drama genre. Why does Gunslinger focus on this genre in particular? Anuvahood and Shank focus on this type of genre as its a genre that can be successful if done right. There aren't many films with this genre which is why a few companies focus on it and make sure that the films come out successful when they do it.

Research the British social realism genre. How do Gunslinger films fit into the social realism genre?

These films fit into the social realism genre as these are things that happen around London and it shows certain classes this.

Why does the UK urban drama genre appeal to an audience?
This genre appeals to people as they don't get to watch enough of it as not many films get released with this. Having this makes it different and unique as its something that needs to be done and some audiences swatch these.

Certification
One final aspect of institution is the certificate the film was awarded for exhibition. This is decided by the British Board of Film Classification.

How does the certification process work at the BBFC?
Having a certificate where certain ages can watch a film is there for their benefit and for the parents. For example an 18 certificate is there so that sex, drugs and crime are there to be watched by people over that age.  Making sure that this done properly is difficult as some people don't listen to the ages.

Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). What is deemed acceptable for an 18 certificate? What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate
The difference is that  a 15 age certificate shows minor drugs, sex etc. Whereas an 18 shows more explicit showing of those contents.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for a film in being given an 18 certificate?

Mock feedback-Penguins

WWW: Q3+4 are stronger and show focus on the questions but overall we have a lot to work on..

EBI: Institution is very weak; did you revise this? no focus on the the questions at all.
very little media terminology...much of this exam contains very general answers that dont show any evidence of studying media (language theory etc)
You must answer the questions for more notes required too.
LR-Re-write Q1 on your blog.

What is the BBC hoping to achieve by including behind the scenes footage?

The BBC are hoping to achieve alot of positive feedback and attract more of a wide range of audience to the behind the scenes. The scenes would include different things to what the programme shows. For example, as you know they would be showing behind the scenes footage. They would be showing this to attract a different audience. This could attract people that want to know how they made the show and what they used to make a success. The programme would just  attract an audience that want to just watch the show and not know anything else. This can be a good thing as both shows would be getting an audience. they also want to show a good, strong, positive  brand image that would be sold during this time of showing the behind the scenes. Making sure that is shown makes the audience believe and trust in BBC as they are well-known broad show. By showing the behind the scenes they can show alot of positivity to the brand image itself as BBC is very popular.
